This percentage decrease calculator answers the two questions that phrase covers. Give it a starting value and a smaller one and it tells you how far the value fell; give it a number and a percentage and it takes that much off.
From 150 down to 120 is a 20% decrease. Take 25% off 200 and you get 150. Percent decrease and percentage decrease are the same sum under two spellings, and both land here. Both arrive with the working, and with something most calculators leave out: what it would take to get back.
How to Calculate Percentage Decrease

Subtract to find what came off, divide by what there was to begin with, multiply by 100.
The division is where it goes wrong. A reduction is always measured against the original figure, never the one left behind. A 30 drop from 150 is a fifth of it. The same 30 taken off 60 is half of it. The starting figure is what gives a fall its size, and swapping it for the ending figure answers a question nobody asked.
Taking a Percentage Off a Number
The second job, and the one a shopper does in an aisle.
Multiply once. Taking 25% off means multiplying by 0.75. So 200 becomes 150, and a jacket at 1,499 with 30% off comes to 1,049.30.
The other method — work out the discount, then subtract it — reaches the same answer and takes twice as long.
Worse, it falls apart the moment there are two discounts. And there usually are.
Stacked Discounts Never Add Up
A shop offers 30% off, and then another 20% off at the till. Most people hear 50%, and the discount percentage they actually get is nothing like it.
It is 44%. Multiply by 0.7, then by 0.8, and you have ×0.56 — so 1,000 becomes 560, not the 500 a straight half would give. The second discount is 20% of an already-reduced price, so it takes off less than it sounds like it should.
The same arithmetic runs quietly in the other direction too. Two consecutive cuts of 10% are ×0.9 twice, which is ×0.81 — a fall of 19%, not 20%. Every stack of reductions comes to less than the sum of its parts, always, and a shop that advertises "30% off, plus an extra 20%" is relying on you not to do the multiplication.
Getting Back Is Harder Than Falling
This is the part worth carrying away from the page, and the calculator states it on every answer.
A fall of 50% does not need a rise of 50% to reverse it. It needs 100%.
Halve something and you have to double what is left to return to where you were.
The fall was a percentage of the larger figure; the recovery has to work on the smaller one that remains. Those two are never the same size, and the gap widens viciously as the drop gets steeper — which is why the table below is worth a longer look than it seems to deserve.

An investment down 90% is not nine tenths of the way to a problem. It has to multiply itself by ten to break even. That is the whole reason a large loss is so much harder to live down than a large gain is to give up.
Depreciation, and Why It Never Reaches Zero
A car bought for 10,00,000 that loses 15% of its value each year is worth 8,50,000 after one year, 7,22,500 after two, and 6,14,125 after three. That is a total fall of 38.59%, not the 45% that three fifteens would suggest.
Each year's loss is 15% of a smaller number than the year before, so the falls get gentler in absolute terms even though the percentage stays fixed. Follow that far enough and something interesting happens: repeated percentage reductions never reach zero. Take 15% off forever and the value keeps shrinking without ever arriving. Only a reduction of exactly 100% empties something completely.
Exactness, Recurring Decimals and Rounding
Whole numbers stay exact. A 60-watt bulb replaced by an 8-watt LED is a fall of 86.67%, and the page shows what the arithmetic gives rather than a value dressed up to two decimal places by habit.
A decimal that runs on is named as such. Some falls never come out even. When that happens the page says the decimal continues rather than passing off a truncated figure as the whole answer.
Measurements are rounded honestly. Type a value with a decimal point and you are probably reporting a measurement, so the tool offers a figure rounded to the significant figures your input justifies, and tells you how many that was.
Prices with symbols and commas go straight in, so ₹1,499 needs no tidying first, and a unit such as 60 kg is understood.
Falls Past Zero, and One Question With No Answer
A value can fall past zero, and the calculator handles it. From 150 down to −30 is a fall of 120% — more than everything there was, which is exactly what a swing from profit into loss means.
Negative starting values work too when the question is well posed — from −150 to −30 is an improvement of 80%, because dividing by the absolute value of the start is what lets a rise between two negatives read as a rise.
One thing this page will not do is guess. "Reduce −200 by 10%" has two defensible readings that disagree about which way the value moved, so rather than picking one and being wrong half the time, it says so and asks for both values instead.
Which Percentage Tool You Actually Want
